General Information

Climate: - Jamaica lies approximately 18 degrees north of the equator, consequently the climate is warm all year round. The average daily temperature is 26.2 degrees Celcius, (79.2F).

Drugs: - Just say no. Do not purchase, sell or use illegal drugs!

Electricity: - Electrical current in Jamaica is 110 volts, 50 cycles.

Lbrary: - A public library is situated on the Lighthouse Road next to Negril All-Age School. Visitors may borrow books during their stay in Negril by making a refundable deposit. Donated books are welcomed.

Medical Service: - The Government Clinic is situated on the road to Savanna-la-Mar, near the gas station. Private doctors are available at the White Swans Plaza, The Plaza de Negril, and at the Negril Minor Emergencies Clinics on the beach road. The nearest hospitals are at Savanna-la-Mar and Lucea, both being approximately 20 miles from Negril. An Emergency Medical Service operates from the Negril Fire Station.

Police: - The Police Station is located on the road to Savanna-la-Mar. 957-4268

Post Office: - As you leave the Negril square, on the Lighthouse Road, the post office is just around the corner, before you arrive at King's Plaza and Sunshine Village. The Post office is open from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Schools: - A Government-owned All-Age School, located on Lighthouse Road is for children 6 to 15 years of age. The Negril Basic School (pre-primary) shares this location. These schools and Sheffield All-Age School, are assisted by the Negril Chamber of Commerce and quite often receive gifts from visitors who wish to support this outreach programme.

Sunburn: - Remember you are in the tropics. Use a protective screen and tan slowly.

Swimming: - For your protection swimming areas are marked off by buoys - away from the activity of motorized craft. Stay out of the sea during lightning storms. DO NOT stand on the cliffs or swim from them during rough seas.

Taxis: - Your taxi might be an ancient Ford, a shinny new Lada or anything on wheels, but it should have a red "PPV" licence plate to indicate that it is a licensed public passenger vehicle. If not, it is an unauthorised taxt, commonly known as a "robot". Beware. It often appears that Jamaicans are holding a contest as to how many bodies can squeeze into one cab. Do not compete. Get a cab for yourself and set the price clearly, before you set off.
